Forsyth and Douglas County high school students pass more than 8,000 fictitious interviews to prepare for careers
FORSYTH and DOUGLAS COUNTY, Georgia., June 1, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Students from 12 high schools in Forsyth and Douglas County conducted over 8,000 mock interviews throughout this school year using Talk about hiring, an automated simulated maintenance tool. Despite visitor restrictions due to the pandemic, students were able to practice their interview skills with personalized, data-driven commentary.
“Interview practice is an essential part of our high school curriculum that helps our graduates enter academia and prepare for careers,” said Mandy johnson, director of college and career programs in Douglas County. “With all the challenges teachers and students faced this year, we had to get creative in figuring out how to continue our tradition of holding mock interviews for students with leaders from the local business community.
Neighbour Douglas and Forsyth the counties both adopted Talk Hiring in the 2020 school year. In both counties, a majority of high school students are opting for career paths in subjects such as health, technology and hospitality.
“Students in Forsyth County had more than twice as many mock interviews this school year than the previous year, ”said Valery lowe, Director of College and Career Development at Forsyth County Schools. “We can’t wait to bring volunteers back from the business world to schools, but the reality is that most job interviews start with a phone or a video screen. Students and teachers have really embraced this new technology which allows us to scale a very real world experience. . “
The Georgia Ministry of Education’s Employability Skills Working Group has prioritized the development of “soft skills” that are most in demand by employers. To develop these skills, districts implemented a range of programs, including mock interviews, ethics trainings, soft skills seminars, and leadership trainings.
“Some employers call it the work ethic; some call it soft skills, and others call it employability skills. Whatever term is used, employers need young workers with these skills. ” mentionned Barbara M. wall, director of vocational, technical and agricultural education at the Georgian Ministry of Education.
