Hemenway sets career high by winning against USC Upstate

Indiana Clemson senior guard Alex Hemenway was a major asset to the Tigers basketball team in their second win of the season. The Tigers beat USC Upstate 81-70 Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum.

During the game, Hemenway scored a career-high 18 points, was 7 of 9 rushing, and 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

Hemenway was enthused at the post-match press conference about his play, but was quick to attribute his Tuesday night success to his teammates being able to find him in the right place at the right time.

“It was awesome,” Hemenway said after the game. “I mean, thanks to my teammates, they did an amazing job of finding me when I was open, and once you see the first go in the basket, it just gets bigger.”

After hitting a single 3-pointer in the loss to South Carolina on Nov. 11, Hemenway took all the blame for not being as aggressive on the court as he should have been.

Head coach Brad Brownell told Hemenway after the loss to South Carolina that he needed to work on his confidence on the court.

“He (Brownell) said just be more confident, just trust your work,” Hemenway said. “We’ve worked harder than ever in our lives this summer to be able to have the year we want to have this year, so just trust that work, trust the progress and just go out there and play.

“It’s difficult when they’re around you throughout the game, but it’s just about finding your places, and then, like I said, my team-mates do a great job of finding me when I’m open… I’m right there in return for a nice pass.”

A big topic tonight was the recent return of the PJ Hall Center. Hemenway knows that being able to have Hall there adds a whole new dimension to the team as he is such a threat to an opposing defence.

“Teams have to decide if they want to give up 3 or if they want to go one-on-one with Hall on the post,” Hemenway said, “so it was really huge when we were able to get him in the game because that he’s proven to be a low scoring factor, and that helps us be able to make plays and get into the passing lane.

The Tigers return to Littlejohn Coliseum this Friday, November 18 to face Bellarmine. The game is scheduled to be announced at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
