Man accused of cornering policeman with stolen truck | News, Sports, Jobs
WAILUKU – Bail has been set at $ 16,000 for a man who allegedly ran over a stolen truck, dragging a police officer and pinning him against a police vehicle.
Eric Vega Jr., 35, who gave no local address, has been charged with first degree theft, first degree assault of a law enforcement officer, unauthorized control of a powered vehicle and resistance to arrest.
Police reported finding Vega asleep in the 2020 Ford Ranger van at the entrance to Paia Elementary School on Monday. Officers attempted to get Vega out of the truck, Assistant District Attorney Jeffery Temas said.
Instead, Vega started the truck and put it in reverse, dragging an officer and pinning him against a police vehicle, Temas said. He said Vega probably knew the officer was injured when he drove away.
The work truck was reported stolen after it was last seen behind the water cooler at Kahului Airport at 3 p.m. on October 1, police said.
“It’s a danger for the community” Temas said, asking that Vega’s bail be increased from $ 10,000 to $ 16,000 during his initial appearance in Wailuku District Court on Friday.
Temas said Vega was previously convicted of second-degree theft, first-degree bail, unauthorized control of a rear-wheel drive vehicle, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, abuse, driving without a license, reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A methamphetamine smoking pipe was found in Vega during his arrest on Wednesday, Temas said.
Vega has asked to be released on surveillance. He has three children and was supposed to start a job, said Deputy Public Defender Andres Tobar.
Judge Chris Dunn set the bond at $ 16,000.
