SAISD launches a new fast-track evening high school
SAN ANTONIO – A new high school in the San Antonio Independent School District weaves and compacts a one-semester curriculum into an eight-week period. Evening Flex High School is a new online education model available for evening students.
SAISD said the school offers a very tailored approach thanks to its low student-teacher ratio for all of the courses offered. For many students, Evening Flex High School could be a seamless transition as classes earn credits for specific high school courses on Zoom.
Francisco Vega high school is enrolled in two SAISD schools.
“During the day I attend Sam Houston High School and in the evening I attend Evening Flex,” Vega said.
Vega dreams of earning a culinary arts degree and someday owning a restaurant. By signing up for Evening Flex, it puts him on a faster path to getting on stage and graduating.
“I would like to graduate at the end of the school year,” Vega said.
“Evening Flex High School is a district-wide opportunity for Grades 9 to 12 students to earn credit toward graduate school on an accelerated basis,” said Dr. Paul Reiser, Principal of Evening Flex High School.
SAISD launched a gradual start-up of the concept in January 2020 with 55 students, followed by a second session with 80 students enrolled. During the 2021-2022 school year, Evening Flex will feature four sessions.
“This year we have about 35 students, and we hope to increase that (number),” Reiser said.
Traditionally, a student completes a course in one semester, however, the online high school offers courses like English that can be completed in as little as two weeks. Teachers like Gabriel González said it was possible.
“(Students are) only allowed to take one course at a time. So there isn’t that big struggle that they have throughout the day with all these different courses on Zoom, ”said González.
Evening Flex is all about organization, focus, hard work, and going at your own pace.
“There’s that kind of excitement that they’re hitting their goals at the pace they want,” González said.
Nightly sessions will take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening for four hours. The first night session will begin on Tuesday August 17 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
For those wishing to enroll in Evening Flex High School, contact the counselor at the student’s home campus.
