The Yunshan Art Museum designed “with love” by CROX and Yuan Gou Design
Simian Mountain is located in the lush Jiangjin District of China, near the Chongqing Metropolis, and enjoys a considerable reputation in the country thanks to the many legends surrounding it, all of which are related to love. Two of the many examples are the staircase found here, comprising six thousand steps, each hand-carved by a boy for love, and the tallest waterfall in China, allegedly “The world’s first heart-shaped waterfall”. It is in this context that the famous Chinese architectural firm CROX found itself designing the new Yunshan Art Museum, in collaboration with Yuan Gou Design. The area surrounding Simian Mountain is rich in natural beauty and has become a remarkably popular destination for curious visitors from all over China and beyond, in part thanks to its proximity to the historic Zhongshan site and the fascinating ancient stories for which she is so famous. . When talking about the place, the architects themselves expressly mention the “extraordinary culture of ‘love'” that permeates the place, going on to explain: “People come here to seek the origins of love, whatever it is: love between people, love for objects, and even love for nature.”
In terms of design, Yuan Gou was responsible for the architectural structure, while CROX took care of the design and division of the rooms. From the outset, the idea at the heart of the project was to use the same natural elements found in the surrounding environment as a means of recreating, both formally and visually, the unique pleasant, rich and vibrant atmosphere that distinguishes the area. .
When visitors take a first look at the New Yunshan Art Museum, they are greeted by a man-made body of water that perfectly mirrors the image of its imposing entrance, housed under a roof with two massive and spectacular locations. which descend almost to the surface of the water. Entering the entrance hall the floor is lowered and, going down a few narrow stone steps, they find themselves in the center of a space that is magnificent with its height and natural light. This space presents large illuminated written signs suspended from the ceiling, offering a counterpoint to the emptiness of the atrium. This is the first art installation that visitors will encounter in the museum: a work of calligraphy entitled âLove Waterfallâ.
When creating the interiors, CROX used a wide range of materials, forming large spaces which, while blending into each other, maintain well-defined boundaries thanks to the colors of the floor and wall coverings used. The entrance hall, for example, has a gray stone floor, with all wooden walls, extending to the high ceiling. Continuing through the museum, however, we make our way to exhibition spaces in which wood is used for the floors and walls, while the ceiling provides the beautiful contrast of white plaster. Further on, during this time, visitors will find pure white marble under their feet; by looking around them, they will discover that they are immersed in a completely white environment suspended between refreshments, convivial lounges and works of painting or sculpture.
At the very heart of the museum, the ceiling takes on a rather particular dimension designed by CROX as a representation of the sky: another central natural element in Chinese poetics. It consists of a structure of wavy transparent strips, placed at an equal distance from each other and illuminated by special LEDs that imitate the rays of the sun.
To conclude, the architects express their poetics with these words: âThe sky surrounds you every time you look up. The three-dimensional wavy structure of the ceiling is inspired by the different shapes of clouds floating above Simian Mountain. The sky is just above your head, providing an ever-changing visual and spatial sensation â.
