Women’s golf battles through the elements on day one of the UTRGV Invitational
MCALEN –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Women’s Vaqueros Golf Team battled the weather to stay in contention after day one of the UTRGV Invitational Monday at McAllen Country Club.
Despite a cold front making its way midway through the first lap that sent temperatures plummeting nearly 20 degrees and bringing constant drizzle with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour, the UTRGV first team is tied for seventh and just eight shots away. the advance held by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Vaqueros opened with a first-round 306 that put them in second place after the first round, but a second-round 322 dropped them to a tie for seventh with Drake for a two-round total of 628. The second team of the UTRGV is in 16and place with a total of 736 in two rounds with rounds of 369 and 367.
Second year Samantha Garza led the Vaqueros with a total of 155 in two rounds while tied for 14and. Garza opened with a first-round 79 before shaving three shots for a second-round 76 and is six shots clear of the lead held by Drake’s Haeri Lee.
Second year students Sophie Tejeda and Mercedes Vega are tied for 21st with a total of 157 in two rounds. Tejeda started with an even-par 72 first round that saw her post a front nine six-under par 30 with four birdies, an eagle and four pars before posting a 36 on the back nine. Tejeda then followed with an 85 second round. Vega opened with a 75 second round before posting an 82 second round.
First-year student Maria Jose Ramirez seat in 28and place with a total of 159 in two rounds after posting rounds of 80 and 79 as a freshman and former Edinburgh High Madi Ozuna is tied 61st with a total of 169 in two rounds after rounds of 83 and 86.
Graduate student Rachel You is tied 69and with a total of 174 in two rounds after posting rounds of 92 and 82. Mason Rawls is in 71st with a total of 175 in two rounds with rounds of 86 and 89.
Junior Blayke Van Houten is in 77and with a total of 189 in two rounds with rounds of 96 and 93 and a freshman Catherine Flores is in 78and with a total of 198 in two rounds after rounds of 95 and 103.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course for the final round on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.
