The Yavapai College men’s soccer team took on the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes on the road Tuesday night in their season opener and emerged victorious 4-1.
The season-opening win was also the first collegiate coaching win for head coach Chris Houser.
“First off, congratulations to the women’s team – it was a great night for YC soccer,” Houser said after watching the women win 3-1 before her team’s game. “Whether it’s my first win or my 100th win, I couldn’t be more excited to see this team improve.
“Coach Ryder [Vanderheyden] is invaluable for the team and for me, so I’m delighted to have him on the sidelines with me. The team begins to form. As a head coach, I think it’s about improving every day, on and off the pitch. When we stay disciplined, we are able to be creative. If you love good soccer, come support YC men’s soccer! »
YC got off to a fast start as second-year forward Christopher Cornn scored the first goal of the season just three minutes into the game. Second-year striker Mael Lopes picked up the assist on play.
CSN tied the game at 1-1 just 10 minutes after Cornn scored, however, the tie didn’t last long as second-year forward Iann Topete netted his first goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Cornn picked up the assist on Topete’s goal.
The 2-1 lead the Roughriders took into the locker room at halftime proved to be one they would not relinquish.
About 30 minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Jose Vega provided YC with considerable reassurance.
Vega scored his first goal of the season and was assisted by second-year midfielder Brandon Pulido. Just two minutes later, Vega struck again for his second goal of the season, giving YC a 4-1 lead which proved to be the final score.
The assist on Vega’s second goal came from freshman goaltender Rushon Sandy who also picked up the win in net on the night.
The Roughriders are back in action on Saturday, September 3 at 4:30 p.m. in Prescott Valley, Ariz., at Mountain Valley Park where they will face the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes.
